How To

How to Fix ActiveX Errors on Facebook

ActiveX is a Microsoft technology that allows users to interact with website content through the use of multiple ActiveX technologies.  Developers with expertise in ActiveX create the technology in different types of languages and a variety of tools to boost the Web browsing experience with enhanced interactivity.  ActiveX is exclusive to Microsoft and is used with the Internet Explorer browser.

Although ActiveX helps to improve interactivity on website it can also be the culprit when it comes to errors you receive when using Facebook.  The errors typically occur when you are working with photos and other media and can be caused by a number of issues.  The problems can be related to your PC, the Facebook platform, or other issues with PC applications you use on a frequent basis.

If you are frustrated by Facebook errors and it has already been confirmed that the problem is not related to Facebook’s platform, here are a few troubleshooting tips you can apply to eliminate the error messages.

Check for Java Updates

ActiveX objects require the use of Java and if your current Java version is outdated it can cause problems with ActiveX tools on Facebook. You should begin troubleshooting by checking your current version of Java.  If you have not downloaded the latest version you can obtain a new version by accessing the Java website at java.com.

Revert to the Default Settings in Internet Explorer

If you are having problems with ActiveX errors when using media on Facebook you can try setting Internet Explorer back to the original default settings under Internet Options.  It is important to note that you may lose other settings in your browser which will need to be re-configured however, setting your browser back to default will tell you if there are any errors in the plugins that you use in Internet Explorer.

You can access the default settings by clicking on Internet Options located on the drop down menu under Tools in Internet Explorer.

Check for Browser Glitches

Just like your PC, your browser can develop mysterious bugs over a period of time and from regular use.  If your browser is not working properly the problem can also affect the functioning of ActiveX objects.  To ensure the issue is not related to Internet Explorer you can try uninstalling it and then installing a new version.

Use a PC Optimizer

When you use your PC on a regular basis, the files become misaligned and fragmented over an extended period of time.  Your PC’s registry can also develop broken commands, unnecessary files, and leftover files from uninstalling programs.  A trustworthy PC optimizer will defragment your PC, clean the registry, and clear any errors from your hard drive.  These are all factors that can potentially contribute to ActiveX errors on Facebook.  A good PC optimizer will put your PC back in proper working order and will also speed up your PC’s performance in the process.
