How low are you willing to CybeRTO and CybeRPO? Part 1 of 3

When it comes to security and a business continuity plan there are two things companies care about the most, CybeRTO (Sigh Ber To) and CybeRPO(Sigh Ber Po). For people who are not in the IT world this might sound a bit like a foreigen language. RPO and RTO are very common in the IT world and are a pretty simple thing to understand once it has been broken down for you.

So what exactly is CybeRTO and CybeRPO? For most people who have been around IT terms for a while hear anything that ends in RTO and RPO they immediately think of recovering data, which is partially correct in this case.  CybeRTO and CybeRPO are nothing more than the combination of cyber security response time combined with the recovery of data following a cyber attack.

CybeRTO has two definitions:

(Cyber Response Time Objective):

The first definition is how long does it take to respond to a Cyber threat.  CybeRTO can be as easy as patching a known vulnerability before an incident happens or as complicated as reacting to an event after the cyber event has already impacted an environment.

(Cyber Recovery Time Objective):

The second definition is how long does it take to recover from a Cyber attack that has impacted your environment.  CybeRTO can be as easy as patching a known vulnerability after an incident happens or as complicated as restoring a server or workstation to a point before the cyber event happened.  This definition is what most people associate as RTO.

CybeRPO is more cut and dry.  It is the maximum period of time in which your data might be lost from a cyber attack which resulted in a major service disruption.
